New Paintings by Courtney Reid

Corona del Mar, California  USA
November 15th - December 16th, 2003

Multi-textured, full of fierce rhythm and motion, and unabashedly improvisational in nature, Reid's paintings seem to capture the music she often listens to as she paints. The phantom-like figures who inhabit her canvases can appear static at one moment and violently in motion the next, and are sometimes obscured by a visual fog that seems to inhabit the space between the viewer and the painting. Viewing Reid's work has the same effect as listening to a great jazz recording, where the listener experiences something new with each successive hearing. Highly recommended.

BIOGRAPHY

Women Before 10 a.m. c1998

"Women Before 10 a.m. features never-before published portraits by celebrity photographer Veronique Vial, a captivating collection of todays sexiest and most sought after fashion, cinematic, pop culture beauties, starlets, and models from the U.S. and Europe, including: Laetitia Casta, Helena Christensen, Naomi Campbell, Demi Moore, Wiona Ryder, Patricia Arquette, Robin Wright Penn, Salma Hayek, Milla Jovovich, Christina Ricci, Courtney Reid...."

Born in the Hollywood Hills, under the sign of the Hunter, Courtney Reid grew up watching paint get pushed around. Her painter father's sole pupil, she rose to the challenge of hunting down diverse painting heros, from Goya and Francis Bacon to Nathan Oliveira and Cy Twombley.

Her father, Kenneth Andres Reid, an Uruguayan born lifelong painter, immigrated to the U.S. via New Orleans, Louisianna, and later Los Angeles, California. Attending Chouinard Art Institute he studied under Rico Lebrun, who made a great impression on him. He gained U.S. citizenship by joining the armed forces during World War II; and exhibited with Motherwell, DeKooning, Pollock, and others. After marrying the first Miss Brazil, he married the be-witching flowergirl from that first marriage. Their last child was Courtney Reid.

Raised without television in the famous Sin Center of Hollywood, Reid's early years were centered around her father's studio, art galleries and museums, great literature, cinema, and running the Hollywood Hills.

The ferocious figurative content of Reid's oils remembers the ardent journey and impending decay of humans and reclaims territories lost after the protracted illness and death of her father. Sharing his addiction to paint, she is a powerful and prolific painter who at 32 has a decade of collectors behind her.

Inspired by a trip to the Met, Reid focused on Byzantine and Roman frescos. The influence developed into her "Red Series." Reid spent the summer of 1998 painting the first of the Red Series  in a Louvesciennes studio - near the Crazy Horse Saloon - just outside of Paris. The Red Series imagine the ancient feel of mythology, and of them watching us - with completely spontaneous  energy and form. Her sculptural machinations could derive from Bacon's input, or take us fartherout toward Nathan Olivera. Whatever the subject, Reid insists she's faithful to her fathers demand that what matters is the paint.
